Quilled Picture Portrait Of Jesus Christ - Into Thy Hands.....

This quilled picture portrait of Jesus Christ on the cross reminds me of his last words. " into thy hands I commit my spirit". This complements and completes the series of  3 other  Christ's portraits I have done which relate to the passion .

Crown of Thorn
To Calvary
Father Forgive Them

I have used a combination of coils, zig-zag folded shapes (tutorial here) and graphic quilling for this project. I have outlined the portrait in white to achieve the effect of reflected light. I think it helps to enhance the image and bring it out of the white background.

I have tried to make the nose look a bit hooked by arranging the shapes appropriately.

All you wonderful people are so generous with your comments and it encourages me no end to try more difficult project. I would love to hear what you think of this one.

Quilled Picture Portrait of Jesus Christ - Father, Forgive Them

A quilled portrait of Jesus Christ On the cross, quilled landscape style with basic shapes in black & white is today's post. Easter has no meaning without Good Friday, so this is dedicated to all believers in Christ, in mercy and in forgiveness and redemption. The greatest gift is to be able to forgive those who hurt us.

I quilled this because it reminds me of the moment when Christ said "Father, forgive them, for they know not what they do".

I am glad that the beauty of the face has come out well. I have quilled it like a mat so that it can be glued onto any backing.

I have done a couple of portraits of Jesus Christ, both relating to Good Friday here and here. One was using basic shapes and the other using strips packed densely. I was determined to get the eyes and the expression just right, so I chose a design with the eyes opened to work on.

I'd love to hear your comments.

Happy Valentine Quilling - Quilled Walt Disney Cartoon 101 Dalmations

Happy Valentines Day to all. To celebrate, a quilled picture from Walt Disney's cartoon, 101 Dalmation, quilled landscape style using basic shapes and graphic outline. I have used pink and blue for the collars instead of the red and blue as I wanted a red heart as the background.

I have quilled the eyes similar to what I did for "A Lion Share of Love", which is another adorable quilled cartoon.

The heart is created on photoshop as the cartoon will go into a box frame and I don't intend to put the heart. In my opinion, the heart backing is better for a card rather than a framed picture.

It took me 3 A4 sheets  and  a lot of quilling as I have used small basic shapes (3" lengths). However, these are getting much easier for me to quill once the basic shapes are done. I now make all the basic shapes varying the sizes slightly and then do the gluing. That way I find I can work much faster as I make the basic shapes while watching TV. So it is not as much a strain as it used to be.

Christmas Quilling- Quilled Stained Glass Window

Now for a change!! A quilled picture of the Nativity of Christ. A quilled mosaic stained glass window design using only beehive quilling, quilled like a mat.

If you hold it up, the light comes through just like a stained glass window; the reason for using beehive. Looks rather holy ( Just couldn't resist that pun!!).

Well it took me a lot of time to get the beehive quilling stuck one to the other!! Not an easy task at all!! Mother Mary's face had to be redone twice. Would have been much easier to glue it to the backing, but I wanted to try and use clear plastic for the final mounting so the light can come through.

I am happy with the results as it is something unique!! Probably the first time a mosaic design has been quilled!!

Hope you like it too. Should look great on a card too.

Sorry I forgot my how to!!

The steps involved are fairly simple but the task is laborious for someone like me who does not have too much patients!! I basically overlaid a printout with a plastic sheet and shaped the black outline with around 4 strips stuck together for a thick, visible outline and then filled it with beehive quilling ensuring that each sub-coil had glue on the sides. To do this, I basically filled the shape with beehive and then took a tad of glue on a toothpick and poked it between adjacent sub-coils to stick them together. Got them stuck to my fingers many a time, threw out a few in a temper and then managed to complete it somehow. It did get easier with practice though. Just made sure the proportions of the hands were as per the drawing.

I used a towel to hold the beehive coils down till dry after I had that "eureka" moment. Avoid getting the glue on top,but if you do, do not panic. Just wipe it off with a damp napkin before it dries. Keep your fingers clean at all times so keep a damp cloth handy.

Quilled Picture Portrait Landscape Style - Angelina

As promised here is my Landscape style (quilling by pasting basic shapes) quilled portrait. I followed the same steps but continued to fill in all the spaces with Zig- zag quilled shapes. I call it Angelina coz she reminds me of Angelina Jolie at first glance. I have filled the inner part of the iris in a lighter shade of green and hence it gives it a rounded appearance.
I have also glued a black eyelid to shadow the top of the eyes to make them look a bit hooded.

I am not too happy with the nose. It looks a bit too rounded and I should have made it sharper. Well but nature is not perfect, and that really is the whole beauty of nature.

Quilled Picture Portrait of Girl - Graphic Quilling

I quilled a portrait which I called pouting penny and followed it up with quilled Christ portrait for which I used the method I use for landscapes and another Christ portrait for which I used multi strips with which I filled the whole piece.

For this quilled portrait, I tried something slightly different for the hair, as the shape I used for Pouting Penny's hair had spaces in the middle. So I  made Zig-zag circles like in the water for the quilled waterfall landscape.  ( The tutorial for the basic shape are here). I have combined dark shades to get shadows in the hair to create depth. Make sure you use dark colors to create a shadow for the hair that envelopes the face to give the impression that the hair is sitting on top of the face.

What I concentrated on here were the eyes, which I wanted to look lively and I think it turned out very well as it really looks alive.
I folded the strips zig-zag and then looped it 3/4 of the way instead of making a circle and encircled it twice to make it like a  tear. Then I quilled a small black peg. I allowed the black coil to unwind just a tad so it is easier to shape. I needed it to look like a half circle, so I flattened the top and pasted it into the top of the green tear.
The pic gives a clear idea of how the eyes are quilled. For the highlight I cut a small white circle (preferably  shiny white paper) and pasted it. Remember the highlight comes from a light source, so it should be placed on the same side in both eyes.  Highlights are most important  in making the eyes light up and give life to the portrait. Dead pan eyes make your piece look like an alien !! Always try quilling the eyes, instead of pasting plastic eyes, as it makes the image more lifelike.

I finished off by graphic quilling the face.

The next post will be my landscape styled portrait.

Graphic Quilling - Psychedelic Lady

I tried this multi strip, graphic quilled portrait from an image I found on the net. All the elements are made using multiple strips which I pasted together and then, manipulated the shapes by pulling each strip to different lengths. Wherever possible, I made the shape and pasted it to the backing.

The best way to get the circles are to create an arc by pulling the strips like the pink one at the forehead and then sticking one end on the backing and holding the other with forceps and turning the paper till the proper circle is formed. Then while you still hold the end with the forceps slightly raise it and roll a toothpick with glue along the edge, allow to dry slightly and then stick it and hold it till dry. It is not necessary to paste it completely.

The eyes too are quilled and they turned out great. I'm really proud of the eyes!!

Quilled Portrait Landscape Art- Pouting Penny

Well I  quilled this portrait to see if I could get the features right and I think I managed it OK. I saw a couple of beautiful quilled pictures and wanted to try out something similar. I used my usual fillers but for the hair, I wanted a straight look so I folded the strip like a fan and then encircled it. I used a combination of yellow, black and brown mixed in order to get the flowing appearance.

I think my quilling style is different from the other quilled pictures out there, as I use different basic quills for the different elements.

Well, guess I have stumbles upon my own landscape quilling technique!!

I think its a outcome  for my first attempt at quilling a human face.

Quilled Picture Portrait Jesus Christ Bearing Cross - To Calvary

I quilled a portrait, landscape or picture style of Jesus carrying the cross different from the previous one. For this project I used my own quilled filler and for the lines that needed to be well defined I used strips. This image was quilled like a mat and pasted on a black background.

I just folded 3mm strips Zig zag between thumb and forefinger and encircled and pasted to make the filler. I am really thrilled with the results. I used forceps to paste it and am now gaining on the battle with the paste!!

Hope you like this one as much as I do... it took me ages to complete.

Quilled Jesus Christ Portait Landscape Picture- Crown of Thorn

Its lent and I was inspired to create a quilled portrait, landscape or quilled picture style, symbolizing the crucified Christ. I found a vector photo in black and white and used it to quill this. It was a labour of love... it took me many hour but its completed at last and I'm thrilled with the results. The eye was the most difficult as it gives the character to the image and I didn't want Christ to look ferocious or angry by getting it wrong. In the end I managed to get it just like the original image I used. I hope you like it as much as I do.

The image of Christ and the cross is composed of strips pasted to the base. I found that pasting the strips for the outline and filling it with the relevant color strips was the easiest way to do it. I initially got myself tied up in knots trying to paste the filler strips without the outline, but I soon realised that I had gotten hold of the wrong side of the stick. Anyways, the background circle is made of loose marquee pasted densely.

I have tried to make the curve of the strips to follow the natural shape of the body and the unevenness is by design tor try to make it as natural as possible.
